Why this template works?

This has been created using a handwritten font, which when tested in our research proved to be a more popular style of text. When you add in a bold font, like in the product name on the address label, it is more likely to be looked at first than a label with all normal text. Also, when a round label was completely filled in the research, respondents spent 20% longer than average looking at it. Adding an emotive word, like ‘enjoy’ encouraged participants to look at a label for 10% longer.

The use of emotion is very strong in this design with the smiley face displayed in different ways on each label. In fact, our research showed that an emoji in the design made people 14% more likely to look at a label. With a face displayed on a label the chance of looking at it first was 18% higher. When this handwritten font was tested in the research it increased the consideration of the parcel by 30% and perception of quality by 14%. By using a relevant image such as the tea cup it helps the viewer understand what the product or parcel is about. With just seconds to make decisions, consumers sometimes skip text altogether and absorb the most vital information through visuals.

The use of the word ‘handmade’ so prominently across the design helps the reader understand what the product or parcel is about. It also helps perceive an item as quality and shows it has been made with care. During our experiments, when the image conveyed what the contents were e.g. in the knitting image, this helped increase the amount of time spent looking at the item. The design completely fills the labels and uses a handwritten font, bold shapes and contrasting colours. We know from the research that all these principles proved successful.

To help us make decisions, we rely on rules of thumb or shortcuts known as heuristics. For example, when a shelf is untidy and stock is low, that makes us believe that the product is popular and well worth a try. Ticks are a simple but effective way of creating a mental shortcut for the brain to give instant approval on your products. In our research, it was found that the fresh and organic round label created a willingness to pay 25 pence more for the contents. The label with ‘Verified by’ on improved the perception of quality by 42% and love by 68%. When a medal was used to show award success it improved the perception of quality by 53% with participants willing to pay an extra 52 pence for the contents.
