How to design CD and DVD Covers
Are you about to hold a wedding or a special event? Are you in a band or choir? Whether for business or pleasure, professional or fun, there are always occasions that need to be recorded.
DVDs and CDs are often the best way to share video and audio with family, friends and business contacts. And at Avery WePrint, we specialize in personalized CD, DVD and Blu-ray discs and inserts.
From promoting your own music to producing videos for clients, or recording performances and special trips to raise money for schools and charities, there are a million reasons to share audio and video recordings. You might also be using discs for data storage at work.
It’s always important to give the CDs, DVDs and Blu-Ray discs you’re sharing a really professional look, whether you’re selling them, giving them away or using them yourself.
Custom-Printed Case Inserts
Custom-printed case inserts are a good place to start. Cases keep discs safe and are known as ‘jewel cases’. The printed inserts show through the clear plastic casing, so you can create a branded look and give full content information too.
For a more complete look, you can also personalize the CDs, DVDs, or Blu-ray discs that go inside to match the case. And this is practical too, because your discs won’t get mixed up and put in the wrong case if it’s easy to see what’s on them.
You can either create stickers for discs, or have your design printed directly onto blank, recordable CD, DVD and Blu-ray discs.
Know your CD or DVD case and disc sizes
Cases for compact discs and DVDs can have different thicknesses. Standard cases have a spine of around 8mm, while slim cases are a space saving alternative with a spine just over half the standard width, usually 5mm (you’ll see the options for standard or slim cases when you start creating case inserts using our online design tool).
If you’re creating stickers for CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs, you’ll need to know what size the hole is in the middle. It can vary between 15mm and 40mm in diameter, so the disc label holes are 17mm or 41mm to allow for this.
Standard CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs all have the same diameter of 120mm. The labels are 116mm wide, so when applying them, allow for a 2mm edge around the label.
Custom CDs and DVDs are great value
It doesn’t cost as much as you might think to achieve a professionally branded or highly personalised look. Printed CD and DVD case inserts start at £11.99 for 10, with a 50% saving on orders of 100 or more.
Personalised CD and DVD stickers go from £11.99 for 30, with 50% savings on orders of 300 or more.
To order recordable discs with your design on them, there are different costs for CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs. Prices start at £17.99 for 10 custom printed CDs (all prices include VAT).
How to get started
Go to the Personalised CD, DVD, Blu-ray discs and inserts and choose which of these you want to work on. For disc labels, select the correct hole size, are inserts, select the type of case and for printing onto discs, select the type of disc.
Then you can click on ‘Start designing’. This is where you choose to use a blank a pre-designed template. Templates are the actual size and shape of the label, disc or insert. Alternatively, you can upload a PDF of finished artwork.
Whether you choose a blank or pre-designed template, the online design tool allows you to add text, including curved text which can go round the disc. You can also add shapes, a background and photos. And your design can go right up to the edge so there’s no white border.
We hope you’ll be pleasantly surprised when you see your finished case inserts, disc labels or discs. We believe in using high quality materials and printing processes – not only for longer lasting, practical media storage solutions, but also to enhance your designs.
