What is Recycle Week?

Recycle Week is an annual campaign dedicated to encouraging people and organizations to act in reducing waste and recycling more. Organized by environmental groups and supported by businesses, Recycle Week promotes the idea that sustainability begins at home and in our workplaces. The theme for 2024 is “Circularity Starts at Home,” focusing on the importance of integrating recycling into our daily routines and fostering a circular economy where resources are reused, and waste is minimized.

Avery’s Recycling Achievements in 2024

At Avery, sustainability is at the core of our mission. We believe in the power of small actions to create big change, and our commitment to recycling and reducing waste is a testament to that belief. Here’s how we’ve contributed to a greener future so far this year:

  • Cardboard Recycling: In 2024, Avery has recycled an impressive 7.66 tonnes of cardboard. By reusing this material, we’re helping to conserve resources, reduce energy consumption, and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Plastic Recycling: Avery has also recycled 1.42 tonnes of plastic this year. Recycling plastic not only helps reduce the volume of waste that ends up in landfills and oceans but also supports the production of new products made from recycled materials, decreasing the demand for virgin plastics.

Innovative Packaging Solutions

We are committed to continuously improving our packaging to make it more sustainable. This year, we’ve implemented several initiatives to reduce our environmental footprint:

  • Reduced Plastic in Packaging: We’ve taken significant steps to reduce the amount of plastic used in the packaging material for our Home & Family range. By minimizing plastic, we’re not only reducing waste but also making our products more eco-friendly and easier to recycle.

  • Recycled Cardboard for E-Commerce Packaging: In our efforts to support a circular economy, Avery has transitioned to using recycled cardboard for our e-commerce packaging. This change not only reduces the need for virgin materials but also ensures that the packaging can be recycled again, creating a closed-loop system.

  • Baling Internal Brown Box Waste: To further enhance our recycling efforts, we now bale all our internal brown box recyclable waste. This practice has significantly reduced the number of waste transport trips by 60%, lowering our carbon footprint and making our operations more efficient.

Bin Compartments in the Office: Making Recycling Easier

We recognize that creating a sustainable workplace is just as important as our external initiatives. That’s why we’ve introduced bin compartments in our offices to make recycling more accessible and straightforward for our employees. Each bin station is clearly labelled with compartments for different types of waste—such as paper, plastic, and general waste—ensuring that recyclable materials are properly sorted from the start.

This simple yet effective change has not only increased our recycling rates but also raised awareness among our team members about the importance of waste separation.
